Due to the financial crisis and resulting recession, small businesses are reluctant to invest into expensive marketing channels and prefer more cost effective tools, especially the digital ones.

A new research from Ad Age shows that digital marketing has grown in it’s prevalence among the advertisers. According to the report, digital services were #1 generator of U.S. advertising revenue in 2010, accounting for a total of $8.5 billion. This constitutes 28% of the market share. In 2009 this share was 25.9%.

“Fundamentally, I believe that anything that’s not digital will soon be digital or soon be very, very unimportant,” Omnicom President and CEO John Wren told Ad Age.

The research analyzed more than 900 advertising and marketing services agencies to arrive at the results.

April 25, 2011

Google recently announced that it would be ending playbacks of Google Videos on April 29. The existing Google Video users will not lose any of their content. Google is working to automatically migrate the Google Videos to Youtube. In the meantime the migration is done, Google Video will remain accessible on the web and the existing links will be accessible as well.

If you need to migrate to Youtube, here’s the process provided by Google:

  • Google has created an “Upload Videos to YouTube” option on the Google Video status page. To do this, you’ll need to have a YouTube account associated with your Google Video account (you can create one here). Before doing this you should read YouTube’s Terms of Use and Copyright Policies. If you choose this option, we’ll do our best to ensure your existing Google Video links continue to function. See the image below for further clarity.

If you’d prefer to download your videos from Google Video, that option is still available.

A Colorado based startup, Lijit Networks, that provides analytics and advertising services for small and medium size businesses is hiring up to 30 salespeople.

Lijit Networks, which closed a $10 million financing round led by Boise, now has a total funding of $27 million and plans to use the funds to build a 40 person team.

The CEO, Todd Venon, said that the company will hire at all levels of experience, including freshers. “Most of all, we want people who have empathy for the online publisher’s plight,” he said. “They need to be able to talk to them on a business level and really care about them.”

The recruits will be responsible for reaching out to medium-sized blogs and websites to see a product that helps measure traffic. Although the bulk of the hiring will be in Boulder, Vernon said he is “not opposed” to hiring people in other cities.

Compensation structure is heavily leveraged. Those in entry level positions can expect to earn $24,000 annually in base salary. If they meet quota, they can earn $50,000 or more. The company is also looking for senior-level sales hires.

FTC Takes Action Against Fake News Websites

April 21, 2011

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office said that many websites that feature news report about weight-loss benefits of acai berry products aren’t genuine.

They have claimed that these news websites are fake and that the claims about acai berry products helping people to reduce weight is not supported by science. During the last week, FTC has filed 10 lawsuits in courts across the U.S. and Illinois Attorney General has filed an additional lawsuit in her state against the affiliate marketers of acai berry products.

The affiliate marketers place billions of ads linking to these fake news websites and consumers have paid almost $10 million for acai berry products.

Some of the websites in the list are using names such as News 6 News Alerts and Health 5 Beat Health News. The fake news sites use logos of legitimate news websites to easily fool the people into believing them.

“We’re alleging that nearly everything about the defendants’ websites is false and deceptive,” said Charles Harwood, deputy director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

These fake news sites feature a news reports who always produces the same result across several websites. According to the report, the reporter always lost 25 pounds in four weeks without changing either the diet or exercise routine. Moreover, the picture of the reporter is of a real-life French reporter who did not even give the permission for her image to be used.

“We allege this is pure fabrication,” Harwood said. “There never was any sort of test conducted by any independent reporter, and the weight-loss results … are impossible to achieve. There simply is no scientific evidence that acai berries can help anyone lose weight, let alone cause rapid and substantial weight loss.”

The purported news sites also contain “user” comments about weight loss using the acai berry products, including Acai Max and Acai Optimum, the FTC said. But the sites don’t let visitors post comments, and the same user comments appeared on multiple sites “complete with the same spelling and grammatical errors,” he said.

The FTC lawsuits have asked courts to halt the websites’ allegedly deceptive practices.

So for people still looking for weight loss tips, please stay away from these fake news websites.
