Verizon Copies SNL “Bad Jeans Idea” Commercial

March 29, 2012

Last week Verizon came up with a new commercial promoting their 4G directly attaching AT &T. The commercial is named “Bad Idea”. You will see a group of middle aged men talking about horrible ideas while stretching courtside. Once everyone has shared, a title card appears with the text “BAD IDEA” written on it.

Now, if you were there in the 90’s and watching Saturday Night Live, you would find this commercial similar as this was once done on an episode on SNL.

Either Verizon was paying a tribute to SNL with this “Bad Idea” ad, or it has just lost creativity and resorting to copying satirical ads for promoting its actual products. Wonder what AT&T will say in reply to this ad….

Norwegian Air Shuttle Marketing Disaster

March 28, 2012

What seemed to be a very good idea for Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA has turned into one of the worst marketing disasters.

The company launched a contest where good people of Norway were invited to vote on which national hero should be painted on their airlines tail fins.

Well, they probably thought that the winner would be some famous artist of movie star, but to their horror, the leading person at the moment is Oystein Aarseth.

For those of you who do now know, Aarseth who is popular by the name of Euronymous of the black metal band Mayhem. Aarseth was murdered by his formed bandmate, Count Grishnack who was a member of the band Burzum.

Both the men were in limelight due to their heinous acts such as church burnings. They also used to wear real human skull fragments as jewellery.

Today is the last day for voting, but from the looks of it, Euronymous will be on display of the airline’s tail fins. I wonder what would be the reaction of the good people of Norway.

March 26, 2012

There has been a lot of buzz about the latest series Mad Man which was launched yesterday. To mark it’s grand launch, it has come up with a Youtube game that lets you control the characters in a 8-bit format.

You can choose what you want the characters to do by clicking links in video. The aim is to help Don Draper save the agency.

It’s a nice creative move and I’m sure worth the effort. Go and check out the game yourself.

Homeless Hotspot Campaign Sparks Fury Among People

March 13, 2012

This time annual South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas has come into a lot of limelight due to its controversial Homeless Hotspots campaign.

The initiative involves homeless people offering conference attendees wireless Internet access. Throughout the conference, there are homeless participants who are placed wearing t-shirts that say “I’m ________, a 4G hotspot”.

The connection can be accessed by making a paypal donation where the amount will be directly given to the individual seller. The campaign is an attempt to mimic programs that show homeless people selling newspapers on streets.

This project is initiated by the marketing firm BBH New York and Front Steps.

Despite a good motive, social media sites burst with criticism of the campaign.

“As if the homeless aren’t dehumanized enough, they are now being used as Wi-Fi hotspots at South by Southwest,” journalist Saleem Khan tweeted.

“This seems to be going a bit too far, do you think?” tweeted William R. Helms.

To be honest, I cannot judge whether the campaign is morally correct or not, but certainly has been able to generate a lot of publicity and maybe some money for the homeless people as well.
